Today's decision by Vice President Biden to select Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate sends a powerful message both to citizens of the United States and citizens of the world. Senator Harris, like Vice President Biden, understands "these aren't normal times" and is committed to an agenda of global engagement, national unity and restoring decency, justice and reason to the White House. In addition to her credentials as an accomplished United States Senator and former Attorney General of California, Senator Harris is also a daughter of first generation immigrants - a Jamaican father and Indian mother. America's revolution was fought to create a country in which "all men" would have "certain unalienable rights” and that "among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Obviously, America has never lived up to those lofty ideals - especially as regards women, people of color and immigrants. Should Vice President Biden win in November, by having Senator Harris at his side, men and women of all nations will know the revolution continues and hope endures.
